Fastball, Collective Soul Hit Road As Zuniga Tries Sobriety

(3/29/01, 1 p.m. ET) -- Fastball and Collective Soul hit the road together for 15 dates beginning tonight (March 29) in Tucson, Arizona. Both bands are touring behind releases from the year 2000, Fastball with The Harsh Light Of Day and Collective Soul with Blender.
While fans might not detect it, one difference for Fastball will be the absence of alcohol intake--at least on the part of guitarist Miles Zuniga, who tells LAUNCH that he has given up drinking for Lent. Zuniga thinks that sobriety might temper his attitude on the tour. "When you're drunk you do a lot of stupid things and if the other people are drunk that endears you to them. I would never do some of the stuff I've done when I'm sober. I would go, 'Well I don't want to bug those guys.' You know, but when you're drunk you're like, 'Hey, what's going on?!?!' You burst into the room, they're having some dramatic meeting, you know, and you burst in and put the lamp shade on your head, you know."
Zuniga tells LAUNCH that after several years of being in a profession where alcohol is practically a part of the daily routine, he decided he needed to see what it was like without it. "I realized that I had like, hadn't ever taken a break, like, once I became a professional musician. You know, you say to yourself, 'You know, I don't drink when I'm at home.' So I go, 'Well, I'll only drink when I go out.' Well, guess what? You're out every night, you know? And then that becomes your job and then you don't even have to pay for it anymore and it's like in the backstage and on the bus and all around you and everyone else is drinking. You just end up drinking all the time, every day."
