Cake Served On July 24, Band Searching For Tour Drummer

(6/7/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- Cake is surfacing on Columbia Records with its new album Comfort Eagle, which is scheduled for release July 24. The band, whose hits include "The Distance," "Never There," and a deadpan version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," has not released an album since 1998's Prolonging The Magic.
Todd Roper, who played on Comfort Eagle, will not tour with the band, so singer-songwriter John McCrea and the boys are currently auditioning drummers for a forthcoming tour. A publicist for the band said that Roper prefers to stay at home in Sacramento with his family instead of touring.
Roper told LAUNCH that navigating the road is difficult for Cake. "We're not one of those bands that loves each other," he said. "We're not buddies. We don't have that kind of stamina to go out and play 260 shows, 270 shows a year the way some bands can. But when you do reach a point of superstardom and you can treat yourself very well, then you can go out for a long time if everybody has their own bus and planes and food and is able to bring their life along with them on the road. We're in neither space."
Roper added, "Cake is in between. Cake is still trying to do good business, earn a buck, and make a living off of touring."
