(4/19/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- On the heels of its success with the album Everything You Want, Vertical Horizon vies for bragging rights in a half-dozen categories at the 14th annual Boston Music Awards tonight (April 19) at that city's Orpheum Theatre. The group is nominated in the categories of act of the year and rock band, while frontman Matt Scannell is up for male vocalist of the year. The song "You're A God" challenges for song of the year and "Everything You Want" is named in two categories--single of the year and video of the year.
Vertical Horizon drummer Ed Toth tells LAUNCH that the recognition is not going unnoticed. "Awards are neat, man. I mean, it's not why we do what we do, but it's kinda cool when somebody kinda taps you on the shoulder and says, 'Hey, you did a good job, here's a nomination' or 'here's a cool little plaque' or something like that. You know, my mom digs it."
However, the group will not be able to attend, as they are currently en route to Ames, Iowa from Kearney, Nebraska as part of their latest round of tour dates. "We'll keep our fingers crossed and if something happens, that's really cool," says Toth.
Vertical Horizon's total of six nominations is second to Godsmack, who racked up seven. Staind also grabbed six. Other nominees include Aerosmith, American Hi-Fi, LFO, Aimee Mann, Guster, Powerman 5000, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Juliana Hatfield. Scheduled performers include American Hi-Fi, J Mascis, Halfcocked, and Patty Larkin.
