Mudvayne Wins 'New School' Moonman

(9/7/01, 12 a.m. ET) -- Heavy metal foursome Mudvayne took home this year's MTV2 Moonman, which honors the "new school" of artists featured on MTV's sister network, a true 24-hour music-video station. The band's video for "Dig" beat out competition that included India Arie, Craig David, Alicia Keys, Gorillaz, and Jurassic 5 Thursday night (September 6) at the 2001 Video Music Awards in New York City.
The members of Mudvayne--clad in white formalwear, a rainbow of hair colors, and bloody bullet holes in their foreheads--were genuinely humbled by their VMA honor, which they insisted was "for the fans." Off camera, the group told LAUNCH of their evening attire. "It's not about being shocking. It's not about trying to do anything except free ourselves artistically and give ourselves the freedom of not saying that we have limits," they said.
