Keith Murray's Sentence Reduced

(1/23/01, 3 p.m. ET) - Rapper Keith Murray, who is serving a three-year sentence for a second-degree assault conviction, had his sentenced reduced by three months last week by Judge James Graham in exchange for dropping a lawsuit seeking a new trial. Murray was convicted of hitting David Hughes over the head with a stool at a Connecticut concert in 1995.

After his sentence was certified by the Connecticut Supreme Court, Murray was ordered to turn himself in but failed to do so. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and Murray subsequently turned himself in a month later. The rapper is currently in a halfway house and may be paroled as early as May.

Rumors have circulated that Murray, who was signed to Jive Records, will sign with Rawkus Records upon his release. The rapper's 1994 debut, The Most Beautifullest Thing In The World, went gold for sales of half a million copies. In addition, Murray scored another gold record as one-third of the Def Squad--with Erick Sermon and Redman--for the 1998 album El Nino.
