Rage Against The Machine And Indigo Girls Set For New York Mumia Rally

Craig Rosen

(3/30/00, 5 p.m. ET) - Rage Against The Machine and Indigo Girls will spearhead a rally in support of convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal on May 7 at 2 p.m. ET at New York City's Theater at Madison Square Garden. The event, dubbed A Day For Mumia, is being organized by the International Action Center in concert with the Mumia Abu-Jamal's defense fund. Admission to the event is $15. Rage and Indigo Girls are not scheduled to perform at the rally.

Mumia was tried and the convicted for the death of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in the early '80s, and the trial has attracted much attention because of what some claim are inconsistencies in the case. Mumia sits on death row and Rage's vocal support for the captive has been perceived as an insult to police officers everywhere.

Rage singer Zack De La Rocha has said that he does have compassion for Faulkner's widow, and he was asked what he would say to her regarding Mumia and her husband's death. "That we have absolutely nothing to gain from her loss," De La Rocha explained. "And that we would hope that to serve justice in this case -- that we would come together and examine the facts of this case, because it does no justice to her husband, who she lost. Let's not approach this with emotion, and I understand that emotion. We can sympathize with that emotion. Many of us have lost people close to us, but this is about not allowing the Pennsylvania courts to set a precedent in which political dissidents can be tried and hung because of their political beliefs."

The International Action Center is seeking volunteers to help organize the New York rally; interested parties can phone (212) 633-6646. Other celebrities and public figures attending the rally will include Ossie Davis, Susan Sarandon, former New York Mayor David Dinkins, Edward Asner, Gloria Steinem, Dick Gregory, Angela Davis, Mike Farrell, Alice Walker, Tom Duane, State Representative Johnnie Cochran, Reverend Al Sharpton, John Conyers, Ramsey Clark, Pam Africa, Leonard Weinglass, Leslie Feinberg, and Bishop Thomas Gumbleton.
