Ministry Joins Godsmack On Kmart Hit List

(6/15/99, 4 p.m. PDT) - Ministry is the latest victim to feel the wrath of Kmart's policy of not stocking "objectionable" material. The retail chain has decided not to stock the band's recently released album Dark Side Of The Spoon. This comes on the heels of Kmart pulling just-certified-platinum Godsmack's self-titled album from stores a few weeks ago. In case of the Ministry album, it was the cover, which features a fat naked woman facing a blackboard wearing a dunce cap, that the store's officials found objectionable. Godsmack was pulled from the store over the lyrical content featured on the album. Interestingly enough, you can still find both albums, as well as the "objectionable" Ministry album art, on the Kmart website. Godsmack lead singer Sully Erna acknowledges that there are some four-letter words on the album. However, the emotional vocalist tells us that the parent who complained about the album to Kmart made some unfair assessments about the band. "The thing that caught my attention was he says that there's satanic symbols in the record, this thing should be stickered, and that kind of thing. If they're looking for a sticker, so be it. That doesn't bother me at all. I don't care about that. But there's no satanic symbols on the CD and there's nothing encouraging or invoking people to do harm to each other or suicidal tendencies and stuff like that. It's simply my way of venting emotions. I'm simply getting things off my chest. It's real stories that I've gone through, and [they were] my feelings at the time." Godsmack is reportedly preparing a "clean version" of the now-stickered album.
