Surviving Bee Gees Allege Possible Malpractice In Brother's Death

(1/13/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- The family of Maurice Gibb, including his brothers and bandmates in the Bee Gees, is raising suspicions about the care he received at the hospital where he died Sunday (January 12) following abdominal surgery. Gibb, 53, had been admitted to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach four days prior to undergo emergency surgery to remove an intestinal blockage, but he subsequently suffered a heart attack prior to the surgery.

Older brother Barry Gibb told the BBC this weekend that his brother's treatment was "very questionable" and promised that his family "will pursue every factor, every element, every second of the timeline of the final hours of Maurice's life. We will pursue that relentlessly. That will be our quest from now on." Robin Gibb, Maurice's twin brother, added, "We believe mistakes were made and time was wasted" in Maurice's care.

Officials at Mount Sinai have declined to comment on the Gibb family's allegations.

This is not the first time tragedy has struck the Gibbs--youngest brother Andy Gibb, a successful solo artist, died from a heart infection at age 30 in 1988.

Maurice Gibb is survived by his first wife, British singer Lulu, and his second wife Yvonne, with whom he had two children. The family is planning to hold a funeral service in Miami this week and a memorial service in England.

Meanwhile, fans around the world mourned the death of Maurice, who with his brothers in the Bee Gees was responsible for nine Number One hits and sales of more than 110 million records. The trio--which also wrote, produced, and performed on hits for Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers, and Dolly Parton--has won seven Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1997. The group's most recent studio album, This Is Where I Came In, came out in 2001.
