Luke Expects Tamer Tipper

(3/28/00, 12 p.m. ET) - Luther Campbell, better known to rap aficionados as both Luke and Uncle Luke, is renowned for the uncompromising content of his music, but the Miami rap icon expects an elected official to be much tamer this fall than she was nearly a decade ago. Luke says Tipper Gore, wife of likely Democratic Party presidential candidate Al Gore, will surely tone down her anti-free speech rhetoric this campaign. The one-time headline-grabbing censorship advocate was one of the main forces behind the problems Campbell's 2 Live Crew endured because of their sexually explicit music and performances. Luke told LAUNCH that he expects a low-key Tipper Gore this year and explained what he thinks of this year's presidential race. "I don't think she'll go out like how she did back in the days when her husband was getting ready to run for president," he said. "My personal opinion about, you know, the whole presidential campaign is that nobody is really speaking from the perspective of us young black and white Americans -- I think, you know, they're speaking from the perspective of individuals who go out and vote. And we all know those are older people who really, you know, have did their thing in today's society and they're not really speaking from the standpoint of us -- the generation, the people that are actually here. You know, and they're not speaking on behalf of us because we don't go out and vote." In related Campbell news, the mogul is also taking his business -- and sexual content -- to the big screen with Luke's Freak Fest 2000, his debut feature film. The flick centers on a three-day beach party on Miami's South Beach area. Campbell executive produced the movie and will release its accompanying soundtrack on Loud Records. Featured artists on the soundtrack include Big Punisher, Krayzie Bone, Goodie Mob, 95 South, and Luke himself. Luke's Freak Fest 2000 will be shown on BET's pay-per-view network in May. The soundtrack was released on March 14. -- Soren Baker, Los Angeles Got news tips, comments, or questions? Send them to newstips@launch.com.
