(10/11/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- An early morning fire on West Street in Englewood, New Jersey, destroyed the Sugar Hill recording studio, which is believed to be the place that the Sugarhill Gang recorded "Rapper's Delight" in the late '70s. The fire began at 2 a.m. ET on Friday (October 11) and was eventually controlled with the assistance of more than 80 firefighters.
The Sugarhill Gang comprised Big Bang Hank, Wonder Mike, and Master Gee, and they released "Rapper's Delight" in 1979. The song is largely credited as being the first rap radio hit, exposing the masses for the first time to an art form that would eventually sit at the heart of today's pop culture.
The Sugarhill Gang's last release was 1999's Jump On It, a rap album for kids.
