(7/9/02, 5 p.m. ET) - Reports have surfaced that Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan has signed with Def Jam Records. According to published reports, the rapper brokered a deal for his Starks Enterprises label, and will release his next solo offering via Def Jam.
Although Def Jam officially had no comment when contacted by LAUNCH, Lyor Cohen, head of the Island Def Jam Music Group, was quoted by Allhiphop.com as saying, "If you listen to him rhyme, he is one of the greatest. Our job is done if we can just get people to realize how great of a lyricist he really is."
Ghostface Killah released three critically acclaimed solo sets on Epic Records but failed to garner the commercial success that many expected. The rapper's last release, 2001's Bulletproof Wallets, failed to reach gold status, while his 1996 debut, Ironman, and 2000's Supreme Clientele, were each certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies.
In related news, Epic will release a Ghostface Killah greatest-hits set, Wonderful World Of Wallabees, in October. -- Yves Erwin Salomon, New York
