Cake Plans Alt-Alt-Rock Festival

(5/14/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Cake will hit the road at the end of July as the headliner for a festival designed as an alternative to the "typical alternative rock festival."
The Sacramento, California band will be joined on what is being dubbed the Unlimited Sunshine tour by a roster of critically acclaimed artists--experimental rock heroes the Flaming Lips, indie rock favorites Modest Mouse, Mexican electronica outfit Kinky, and hip-hop veterans De La Soul. Bluegrass group the Hackensaw Boys will also perform during set changes.
The tour spans 17 dates beginning July 31 in St. Louis, including a two-night-stand at Brooklyn, New York's Prospect Park.
"This music, to varying degrees, exists outside of the very concepts of mainstream and alternative," says Cake frontman John McCrea. "The criteria are alive and not theoretical, musical and not cultural or economic. We just wanted to find some music that we didn't hate and put it into a show."
Cake released its latest album, Comfort Eagle, last year on Columbia Records.
