Five For Fighting Returns To N.Y. On Anniversary Of Attacks

(3/12/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Five For Fighting, whose popularity surged after the post-September 11 embrace of the group's single, "Superman (It's Not Easy)," returned to New York Monday (March 11) as the city and the country marked the six-month anniversary of the terror attacks.

The group was scheduled to perform Tuesday (March 12) at the city's Irving Plaza. Frontman John Ondrasik tells LAUNCH the timing makes perfect sense. "You know, in New York the song kinda has a different meaning than kinda around the rest of the world. You know, considering the Concert For New York and all of my conversations with firemen and what the song has meant here, it's very emotional and it's appropriate that we're here, I think, now," he says.

Ondrasik also caught a glimpse of the Tribute In Light, the pair of blue light beams unveiled just hours earlier at Ground Zero to mark the fallen Twin Towers. He tells LAUNCH, "I was walking back from the Rangers game to my hotel and I saw the lights and it just brings you back to reality. You know, I try to get away from watching all the footage on TV but yesterday I sat and watched it again because I do think we need to remember. And I think the two lights were a beautiful kind of memorial."

Meanwhile, Five For Fighting now has shows scheduled across North America through early May. Appearances on VH1's Late World With Zach and NBC's The Tonight Show With Jay Leno are also set for April 1 and 2, respectively. The group will be performing its newest single, "Easy Tonight."
