Adam Ant Confined To Mental Ward After Court Skip Attempt

(1/16/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Adam Ant was taken to the Royal Free Hospital and legally confined under Britain's 1983 Mental Health Act after disappearing from his home prior to a court appearance. Ant is scheduled for an appearance at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court Friday (January 18) to face criminal charges for an altercation last weekend.
The nature of his initial arrest required him to remain at home under the hospital's direction. He was not arrested a second time as initial reports led on, but he was found by police outside his home therefore violating sanctions, according to Scotland Yard police spokesperson Sarga Sharma. Currently doctors at the hospital are deciding whether or not Ant is fit to plead at Friday's court appearance. The hospital can detain him for up to 28 days.
Ant is currently faced with charges of: possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence; and assault for an incident in London on Saturday (January 12).
The Sun, a British tabloid paper, allegedly received a call from Ant, real name Stuart Goddard, who told the publication, "They've put me in the Alice In Wonderland ward because they think I'm crazy."
"I've been abducted by the police again," Ant continued. "They've attacked me again. I don't know why they've sanctioned me--I've been here all night. The whole thing is a conspiracy and they're just out to get me. I'm not mad."
