Deftones And Metallica Take Heaviest Grammy Metal
02/21/2001 10:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Brett Atwood
(2/21/01, 10 p.m. ET) - Deftones won a Grammy for best heavy metal performance for "Elite" from the album White Pony tonight (February 21) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The band's win came as something of a surprise over such heavies as Pantera, Slipknot, and Iron Maiden.
Metallica remains in the Grammys' good graces years after their 1989 upset loss to Jethro Tull in the best heavy metal performance category, a category Metallica won the very next year. This year, however, the band won outside their usual turf, picking up the best rock instrumental performance for their symphonic version of "Call Of The Ktulu" with conductor Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from the album S&M.
