Pat Boone Says Eminem Is Entitled To Free Speech
02/21/2001 6:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Brett Atwood
(2/21/01, 6 p.m. ET) -- What's weirder than Elton John agreeing to perform a duet with controversial rapper Eminem? Pat Boone coming to Eminem's defense. Boone, who is best known for personifying a "white bread" image, says he may not like or agree with the content of Eminem's music, but he does respect the artist's freedom of expression.
Eminem has been on the hot seat for his controversial lyrics, which are critical of women and gays. Boone said, "I don't agree with his lyrics, their content, or tone. I'm totally opposed to violence, racism, and homophobia, but I vigorously feel that we must respect an individual's right to speak his mind, especially when it comes to all forms of art."
Elton John, an openly gay artist, came under fire for agreeing to perform with Eminem at the Grammy Awards tonight (February 21).
