(5/24/00, 3 p.m. ET) - A New York judge told The Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde on Tuesday (May 23) that her arrest charges -- for criminal mischief -- will be dismissed if she keeps out of trouble for the next six months.

Hynde and three other members of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) were arrested in March when they slashed and destroyed leather garments from a Gap clothing store, where they were protesting of the clothing chain's use of leather from allegedly "illegally and cruelly" slaughtered cows in India, where cows are sacred.

Following her court appearance, Hynde told reporters, "We're glad we made our point. We highlighted an issue." Since the March incident, the Gap has said they would stop buying animal skins from black markets in India. PETA has praised Hynde for her efforts, stating that she was instrumental in the success of the anti-leather campaign.
