Pearl Jam Guitarist Satisfies Urge For Nash Kato

(2/27/00, 10 a.m. ET) - Nash Kato, former singer for Urge Overkill, is putting the finishing touches on his solo album, Debutante, which will be released in April. It was actually his friend and Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard who urged Kato to make the record.

The rock 'n' roll hipster is signed to Gossard's Loose Groove label, and Kato tells LAUNCH that Gossard was instrumental in making Debutante a reality. "I go back with Stone from the touring days," Kato says. "We used to tour together with Urge and [Pearl Jam], so he always asked me to keep him updated on anything I might be working on. And so, I was just demoing a few songs. I would just send it to him periodically, and after a while we were both looking at 'em like, 'There's enough material here. You know a couple of more tunes [and] there's enough here for an album.' Like, 'Hey, wouldn't that be neat? What if we were to hit record and make a record?' So that's sort of how it came about."

Gossard and Kato solidified their friendship when Urge Overkill opened for Pearl Jam in 1994. Drummer extraordinaire Josh Freese lends his talents to the album, and Kato says it took less than a week for Freese to nail his parts. Debutante was recorded in Chicago and Santa Fe and produced by Eric Rosse. Tracks on the album include: "Zooey Suicide," "Queen Of The Gangstas," "Octoroon," "Cradle Robbers," "Blow," "Debutante," "Rani (Don't Waste It)," "Los Angelena," "Black Satin Jacket," "Pillow Talk," "Born In The Eighties," "Blue Wallpaper," and a cover of Steely Dan's "Dirty Work."

Urge Overkill broke off their 12-year relationship after the 1995 album Exit The Dragon. The band's previous album, Saturation, featured the hits "Sister Havana" and "Positive Bleeding." The band hit big across several radio formats with a cover of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon," which was prominently featured in the movie Pulp Fiction.
