(8/18/00, 7 a.m. ET) - With the political season in full swing, a lot of bands are playing high-profile gigs at the conventions, and the The Gap Band is no exception. The group played at an official function at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday (August 16), and lead singer Charlie Wilson described the scene to LAUNCH.

"We was just havin' a ball," he enthused. "The people was partying, and we was performing. What can I say? We had all of 'em, suits and ties up in there, just having a ball. I didn't expect [it]; I thought they was gonna be a little stiff and stuck up, but I guess the Gap Band pulled all of the party animal out of everybody, you know what I'm sayin'? We kept it goin', though. It was cool."

Since it was a partisan political event, LAUNCH asked Wilson if he had a preference for the election. "Gore. I don't know about Bush," he said. "I think I'd rather see Gore takin' it, you know? I think I'd rather have Gore for a president."

Wilson has a new solo album, Bridgin' The Gap, on the way, and the first single, "Without You," is already out.
