311 And Shaq Get 'Psycho' Onstage In L.A.

(6/25/01, 6 p.m. ET) -- Shaquille O'Neal and 311 hooked up to perform a version of the basketball star's new song, "Psycho" during a Los Angeles-area gig Saturday (June 23), according to the Los Angeles Times. O'Neal joined the rap-rockers onstage during their set at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California as part of the annual Weenie Roast, hosted by Southern California alt-rock radio giant KROQ.

The 300-pound superstar made the most of his brief concert appearance--crowd surfing during his performance and, later, hovering over the crowd in a helicopter as Staind took its turn on stage, the newspaper reports.

The pairing was a reunion of sorts--along with Korn bassist Fieldy, 311 frontman Nick Hexum and drummer Chad Sexton recorded a studio version of "Psycho" with O'Neal earlier this year. Hexum tells LAUNCH that he was surprised by the big man's talents. "It's good, man, it's really good," he said. "You know, when you see someone that's that big you don't think of that as being someone who's gonna have the verbal skills that he does, so, it's really cool."

There is no current plan for a retail release for "Psycho," nor for it to be included on O'Neal's upcoming album, Shaquille O'Neal Presents His Superfriends, Volume I. That album is due from Trauma August 7.

The Weenie Roast also featured a surprise set by Stone Temple Pilots. Scheduled performers included Blink 182, Crazy Town, Jane's Addiction, and Coldplay.

The appearance by 311 took place in between dates on the Vans Warped Tour (owned by LAUNCH Media), which kicked off Friday (June 22) in Phoenix. The tour picks up again Wednesday (June 27) in Chula Vista, California.
