Lonestar Finds 'Walking In Memphis' Familiar Territory

(7/23/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- Lonestar's next single is a remake of Marc Cohn's 1991 Top 20 AC hit, "Walking In Memphis." The award-winning group has a long history with the popular song, so it was natural to include it in their current career retrospective, Greatest Hits - From There To Here.
As Lonestar's Michael Britt tells LAUNCH, "Back when we played clubs before we had a record deal, it was one of the songs that each one of the members of the band used to sing, and we just kinda brought songs we knew to the table, and that was one Richie played piano on and knew. We've been playing that for 11 years now. We stopped doing it for a long time, and we kinda found it again. We were playing right off of Beale Street in Memphis one time--playing an acoustic show--and Richie just started playing it and thought it'd be appropriate for that day. We've been playin' in ever since in our shows."
"Walking In Memphis" has become a most-requested tune for Lonestar over the years, especially when performing acoustic shows. According to Michael Britt, "To us, it kinda wrapped up the Greatest Hits because it was what we were doing before we got a record deal. Before we started having hits, we were playing songs like 'Walking In Memphis.' A couple of the record label guys loved it when we'd do acoustic shows for some radio people and they'd hear that song and request that we do it, so we worked it up and did it on the album. [It] kind of just tied a nice little bow on the Greatest Hits record."
"Walking In Memphis" is the follow-up to Lonestar's multiple-week chart-topping hit, "My Front Porch Looking In."
The new single will be added to radio playlists on August 4.
Lonestar is currently on tour, performing at fairs, festivals and casinos around the country.
The group's August 21 date in Lodi, California was canceled due to slow ticket sales, according to the Lodi News-Sentinel.
