(2/25/03, 1 p.m. ET) -- The Roots got the 45th Annual Grammy Awards crowd bouncing as they backed up Eminem on a performance of "Lose Yourself," the mega-hit single from the soundtrack to 8 Mile, Eminem's feature-film debut.
The Roots' ?uestlove explained to LAUNCH that both the group and Eminem wanted to keep things straightforward during the show. "We just wanted to keep it simple, you know?" ?uestlove said. "I think people were pretty much expecting Eminem to do like a lot of fireworks, or try and top the 100 clones following him in and, you know, all the hoopla and whatever. He just wanted to do something simple, something short, something sweet, and also we wanted to pay tribute to Jason Mizell the deceased DJ of Run-DMC we just wanted to keep it simple."
Eminem took home two awards at this year's Grammys--best rap album for The Eminem Show and best short form music video for "Without Me." Instead of the traditional acceptance speech, after winning for best rap album the Detroit rapper read a list of rappers who had inspired him.
The Grammys took place Sunday night (February 23) at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
