L.A.P.D. Confirms Courtney Love Arrested Under Influence

(10/6/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Former Hole frontperson Courtney Love was first arrested, then reportedly rushed to a hospital, in Los Angeles on the morning of Thursday, October 2, according to the Los Angeles Times. The 39-year-old singer and actress was arrested outside a house just before 3 a.m. after a call was made to police about a possible burglary. Love admitted to breaking four windows at the house. Police would not identify the owner of the residence, who did not wish to press charges, but other sources say it belongs to Love's manager, producer, and boyfriend, Jim Barber.
L.A.P.D. Lieutenant Art Miller told LAUNCH that Love's behavior led police to charge her with being under the influence of a controlled substance. "She displayed the objective symptoms of being under the influence of some kind of intoxicant," Miller said. "She was taken to Wilshire Station, where a drug expert examined her and determined that she was in fact under the influence of some kind of intoxicant, some kind of drug."
Miller told LAUNCH that he did not have information regarding the name or nature of the intoxicant. Love posted bail in the amount of $2,500 and was released from LAPD custody. A date for her arraignment had not yet been set.
At 6:38 a.m. a female resident of Beverly Hills summoned police for what they determined was a medical emergency and was taken to Century City Hospital. Beverly Hills police spokesperson Mitch McCann would not release the person's name, but the Times reported that it was in fact Love, and that she was treated for a drug overdose. She was later released from the hospital Thursday afternoon. A call to the hospital was not returned and there was no further information on her condition.
Love was arrested earlier this year in London for allegedly verbally abusing the staff on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Los Angeles. Police later released her after cautioning her for causing harassment, alarm and distress to another person.
Her debut solo album, America's Sweetheart, recently had its release delayed from the end of October to February 10.
Love, the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, has also appeared in movies such as Man On The Moon, the People Vs. Larry Flynt, and Trapped.
