(6/4/01, 3 p.m. ET) -- Marc Anthony, Lauryn Hill, and Luther Vandross will headline a July 29 benefit concert at the Compaq Center in San Jose, California, to help raise money for earthquake victims in El Salvador and India. The new non-profit Aftershock Aid Foundation and its founder Mickey Shapiro are organizing the event.
Earthquakes struck El Salvador on both January 13 and February 13 this year. The latter quake registered 6.6 on the Richter scale and local officials reported more than 250 earthquake-related deaths, with at least 2,500 people injured. A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Western India on January 26, and the Indian government estimates that 100,000 may have died as a result of the powerful temblor.
All proceeds from the concert will go directly to the victims, according to Shapiro, who said, "Our goal is to raise $5 million, and we're not giving any money to the governments of El Salvador and India," he said. "We'll be working with an organization called Operation USA that was involved with distributing funds for 'We Are The World.'"
Organizing committee members for the benefit include Clive Davis, Quincy Jones, MTV CEO Tom Freston, BMI President Frances Preston, and legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar. Those supporting the cause include U.S. Congressman Mike Honda (D-California), Operation USA president Richard Walden, and ambassadors from El Salvador and India. Tickets prices for the concert range from $60 to $70. For more information about Aftershock and the July 29 event, call 310-275-0398 or send email to aftershock_benefit@hotmail.com.
