Better Than Ezra Working With Beck's Dad

(4/13/01, 6 p.m. ET) -- Better Than Ezra spent part of last week in a Los Angeles studio with string arranger David Campbell, also known as Beck's dad. Campbell, perhaps the premier string arranger and orchestrator in rock music nowadays, is contributing sections to the song "Closer," which is about the arrival of Better Than Ezra frontman Kevin Griffin's first son.
Griffin tells LAUNCH that he was plenty enthusiastic about the prospect of working with Campbell: "There's a few other great string arrangers but contemporary, you know, David has done, you know, the strings on Alanis Morissette's 'Uninvited' and the strings on the Goo Goo Dolls' 'Iris.' I think he did the stuff on the Fuel song, 'Hemorrhage.' It's such a signature sound. When I found out, 'Oh my God, the same guy's done all this stuff and he's Beck's father? Well we got to get him! Can he bring Beck?'"
The song touches a period of life that Griffin refers to as "a wake-up call to what are you doing with your life and how are you living it, and where are your priorities?"
Better Than Ezra's yet-to-be-titled fourth album arrives from Beyond Music on July 24.
