(12/12/01, 1 p.m. ET) -- Respected hip-hop artist Mos Def is expanding his film resume. In the last year, the Brooklyn, New York-bred rapper appeared in Spike Lee's Bamboozled, and MTV's Carmen: A Hip-Hopera starring Beyonce Knowles of Destiny's Child.
In January 2002, Mos Def will join Halle Berry, Billy Bob Thornton, and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs in Monster's Ball. Mos Def portrays the mechanic and father Ryrus Cooper, who helps the racist warden (Thorton) pursue a relationship with the wife (Berry) of an inmate (Combs). The Lion's Gate project was filmed in New Orleans.
Later in the year, Mos Def will also appear in Showtime, starring Robert DeNiro and Eddie Murphy, who play police officers attempting to shine positive light on the department with a stint on a reality television program. Lastly, the rap star has a role in Brown Sugar, a romantic comedy starring Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan, childhood friends who eventually fall in love.
