(4/1/02, 1 p.m. ET) -- Forest Hills, Queens native Art Garfunkel is set to sing a special seventh-inning-stretch rendition of "God Bless America" today (April 1) at the home opener of the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
Garfunkel is proud of his roots and growing up in Queens with former partner Paul Simon, but he realized as a youngster that baseball existed outside of New York.
"It occurred to me when I was a kid that if you're a New Yorker you don't have to be a Brooklyn Dodger fan or a New York Yankee fan, and those few New York Giant fans. . .not for me. And then one day I saw the Dodgers at Ebbets Field play the Phillies and I just loved those red uniforms, they were pinstripe and there was Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts," he said. "I thought, 'There's my team.'"
Asked if he ever thought about changing loyalties due to Ashburn joining the Mets in his later days, Garfunkel added, "It didn't make me move over to the Mets. I've been Phillies all the way. I'm loyal. I stick all the way."
