(3/28/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- New Orleans-based rapper Mystikal is set to release a new second single, "Tarantula" featuring Butch Cassidy, to radio stations. The song was produced by Scott Storch and is the title track from the rapper's latest set, Tarantula, which is presently Number 95 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set has sold more than 585,000 copies since its December release. A Jesse Terrero-directed video for "Tarantula" is scheduled to hit video outlets next week. In addition, Mystikal is scheduled to perform today (March 29) on the Jenny Jones Show.
In related news, Mystikal is currently being sued by New Orleans entrepreneur Steve Winn, who claims the rapper infringed on his copyrights. Winn invented a key chain that, if you push a button, says six different Cajun phrases. Winn maintains that Mystikal used two of the sayings--"You gotta suck da head on dem der crawfish" and "We gon pass good time, yeah, cher!"--in his Grammy-nominated 2000 hit "Shake Ya Ass."
Roy Maughan, Jr., the rapper's lawyer, maintains that the phrases have been around for more than a 100 years and are commonly used, therefore Winn cannot copyright them. Winn is seeking songwriter's credit and a portion of the proceeds from the song as well as $1.25 million in damages. A September court date has been set for the case.
