Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young To Kick Off Tour

(2/5/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) kicks off its new Tour Of America Wednesday (February 6) at Michigan's Palace Of Auburn Hills. It's the same Palace Hills venue where the superstar quartet began its 2000 tour, which was the group's first such outing in 26 years.

The 2000 tour was in support of the Looking Forward album, and while there's no new CSNY collection this time out, there is one thing that hasn't changed--the fact that Neil Young seems to be running the show. It was Young who proposed this year's tour, and CSNY's backing musicians--keyboardist Booker T. Jones and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn (half of Booker T. & the MG's), and drummer Steve "Smokey" Potts--are part of Young's current band and appear on his forthcoming album, Are You Passionate?

Graham Nash confirms Young's leadership to LAUNCH and says neither he, David Crosby, nor Stephen Stills mind it. "That's fine with me. The man's a genius. We all have our roles to play, you know--it's just that Neil has taken the reins this time, and it's fine with all of us," he says.

Young, however, tells LAUNCH that he doesn't view himself as the leader of this gang. "I don't run it," he laughs. "No, I don't want that responsibility. The reason that I play with CSN is because I don't have the responsibility, because I don't have to sing every song, because I like playing with them. I like being with guys I've known for 30 years that have gone through so much with me. Stills, Crosby, and I started off together back in the old days, gone through a lot of things together, so it's fun to look around and see those guys."

CSNY has presumably recovered from Nash's 60th birthday blowout on Saturday (February 2) in San Luis Obispo, California. More than 150 guests attended the bash at the Madonna Inn there, for which Nash's wife Susan asked people to dress in pink and "just act silly." Crosby showed up in a pink bunny suit, and Stills was in attendance, but Young skipped the party to nurse a cold. Nash was serenaded by Bette Midler, who joined a dozen other women in a rendition of "As Time Goes By."
