Suzy Bogguss Spaces Out

(7/29/99, 4 p.m. PDT) - Suzy Bogguss was thrilled to learn that her 1991 hit "Someday Soon" was used for a wake-up call to the astronauts aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle on Monday (July 26).

The song was among the few selected to awaken the five astronauts. Other songs included Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound Of Silence" and Louis Prima's "Beep Beep."

"I think this is the only time in my career where I can truthfully say my music is out of this world!" Bogguss said. "On a serious note, it's a thrill that one of my hits was selected. When it comes to NASA, everything connected to the Space Shuttle mission is scrutinized and perfected, so the fact that they found one of my songs appropriate is a big honor."

Bogguss said what's even more exciting is that her brother heard her singing during a television update about the mission. Bogguss and her husband wrote at least four of the 12 songs on her self-titled album, due Aug. 24. "This was so great this time, because I didn't have to have that talk with him where I say, 'Well, honey, none of your songs made the cut...' And he would walk around and say, 'Oh, it's okay, no problem. I don't mind that none of my songs made your perfectly wonderful album that you think is so great.' It'd be sort of [like] walkin' on eggshells for a little while."
