The Offspring's Dexter Holland Has Terrorism On His Mind

(9/12/01, 3 p.m. ET) -- The attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. yesterday (September 11) come as no surprise to the Offspring's frontman, Dexter Holland. He's been thinking about terrorism for some time, with the result being the title track to the band's 2000 album Conspiracy Of One. Holland told LAUNCH that the idea of terrorism has changed a lot during his lifetime.
"A generation ago, people were afraid of the U.S.S.R. as an entity, as something to be afraid of in terms of whatever--if there was a threat of nuclear Armageddon or something. Whereas nowadays, I think what would happen is it would be much more likely to be a guy from Libya or Yemen," he said. "That was actually kind of a scarier thought, because there's no predictability, no way to prevent it even."
At press time, U.S. authorities had not publicly identified any group or nation involved in the attacks.
As for the Offspring, the band recently wrapped up its Conspiracy Of One world tour, and Holland told LAUNCH he plans to lay low for a while and recharge. He added that there probably won't be a new Offspring album until the latter part of 2002.
