(7/24/01, 3 p.m. ET) -- The Aftershock benefit concert scheduled for July 29--an event designed to raise funds for earthquake victims in El Salvador and India--has been canceled due to a lack of corporate sponsors, according to Mickey Shapiro, the founder of the California-based Aftershock Aid Foundation. Marc Anthony, Lauryn Hill, Anoushka Shankar, and Luther Vandross, among others, were scheduled to headline the show, but anticipated corporate sponsorship failed to materialize because of the economic downturn in Silicon Valley, said Shapiro.
The event was planned for San Jose's Compaq Center and had a goal of raising $5 million that would go directly to victims of the earthquakes.
Shapiro said of the cancellation, "This is an unfortunate turn of events, but we couldn't with a good conscience ask the artists to perform the benefit pro bono, without funding from major corporations to underwrite the cost of the show. I'd rather have people send monetary contributions directly to our foundation so that we can help the victims more immediately."
The Aftershock Aid Foundation is still accepting donations for the earthquake victims (tax-exempt status pending). For information on how to contribute funds to the cause, call (310) 275-0398.
