Sisqo's Protege Group LovHer Explains Meeting Mr. 'Thong Song'

(3/26/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- Sisqo's sophomore album, Return Of Dragon, may have sold poorly when it was released last year, but the lead singer for Dru Hill, known for his hugely successful solo hit "Thong Song," has found a gem in the female R&B quartet LovHer.

The group which includes members Chinky, Buttah, Serenade, and Kenji, recently leaked their song "How It's Gonna Be" to radio stations in New York, as the first release from their debut album, To Know Her Is To LovHer, which is scheduled to be released on May 21. Chinky, who was the first member in the group, explained to LAUNCH her connection to Dru Hill. "Well, I actually know all of Dru Hill. We all pretty much caught the bus to school together. I went down to their jobs 'cause they worked at a store called the Fudgery. And they used to sing about fudge. And they put the group together and did demos, you know, and as soon as I know it, they're out. He was like, 'Yeah, we're going to put together this female group, you going to do it?' I was like, 'Yeah.' I was like, 'It depends on the girls,'" she said.

Later, Sisqo met Buttah and Serenade, who were living in Milwaukee at the time. Buttah explained, "Yeah, we met him while we were there. Me and her (Serenade) interviewed talent every time they came to town for, like, public access TV shows. And at the time, me and her were in a group. So at the same time we were trying to push our stuff so we could try to get a deal or something. Their management wanted to manage us, but that didn't work out. So he mentioned him trying to put together a group."

Kenji, the last member to join the group, was linked to Sisqo via her sister, who was in a group that shared the same manager with Dru Hill. Kenji's sister invited her to come see the group perform when they passed through Los Angeles. "She was like, 'There's nothing but guys there, and I don't want to be the only girl.' So I'm like, 'OK.' And I had done other groups, so I was like, 'I don't know if I want to do a group. I'll just go with her.' And I met Sisqo, and he was like, 'Oh, my God. Your look would be perfect for the group. If you sing half as good as your sister, I would love for you to audition for the group.' I didn't believe him, and I heard Chinky, and I was like, 'She can sing. I mean if he gets it together, definitely, I want to do it,'" Kenji said.

LovHer recently taped the "How It's Gonna Be" video in Los Angeles. A release date for the single has not been set.
