(9/11/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- Recording artists Monica and Usher were excited Friday (September 7) about participating in the evening's 30th anniversary celebration for Michael Jackson. Usher and Mya opened the show, performing Jackson's song "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." In the show's tribute to Jackson's film debut, The Wiz, Monica portrayed Dorothy and sang the song "Home."
Monica spoke to LAUNCH about the hard work put in while preparing for the show. "The rehearsals have just kinda been long," she said. "Because one thing that Michael Jackson is and all of us must know is that he is a perfectionist. And you wouldn't want to do anything for him or in tribute of him and not be the same way. So we've been working quite a bit here. I think Usher and Mya have been here for weeks."
Usher added that being a part of the show was a way for him to pay his own personal tribute to Jackson. "When I accepted this opportunity, it was like, 'Man. Everything that I am is because of Michael. This is just really my opportunity to thank him, first-hand."
Usher's third album, 8701, released last month, is Number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart.
