Cypress Hill Smoke Out Tour 'Unsuitable' For New York Venue

(9/10/01, 4 p.m. ET) -- The New York venue for the Cypress Hill Smoke Out tour has backed out of hosting the multi-band event, citing concern over the fans likely attending the marijuana-centric concert. The September 29 show has been postponed pending the procurement of another location, according to its producer, Guerilla Nation.

The concert, featuring the tour's namesake and Deftones, Redman, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Fear Factory, and Busta Rhymes, "was suddenly deemed unsuitable by the PNC Arts Center due to various musical events this past summer at the venue that resulted in less that desirable conduct from attendees," according to a statement released by a Smoke Out spokesperson.

Guerilla Union president Chang Weisberg expressed his regret over the decision. "A lot of money has been invested in producing this show, and Cypress Hill and Guerilla Union are ultimately disappointed not to be able to do the show right now, but promise to bring the Smoke Out to the East Coast as soon as possible," he said.

The Smoke Out has proved a success in Southern California, drawing more than 50,000 people last year, making it the largest single-day music festival on the West Coast. The event touts itself as an "All-Day-Mind-Opening-Music-Festival," and has long been associated with the pro-marijuana movement.

Meanwhile, the Honolulu, Hawaii date for the Smoke Out has now been moved from October 14 to October 21. Dates in Devore, California on October 6 and Oakland, California on October 13 remain as scheduled.
