(5/30/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- Production is set to begin next week in Houston on the Artie Mandelberg-directed VH1 original feature MC Hammer. Newcomer Romany Malco will star in the title role. The project, which has a budget of $4 million, will chronicle the rapper's early days as a batboy for the Oakland Athletics baseball team to his rise to stardom and his subsequent financial ruin. The film was written by John Wierick.
MC Hammer (Stanley Burrell) made millions of dollars in the early '90s with hits like "U Can't Touch This," "Turn This Mutha Out," and "Too Legit To Quit." However, throughout his career he was dogged by hip-hop purists for his crossover success. In 1997, the rapper filed for bankruptcy. Hammer has since dedicated his life to God and family.
The rapper released his most recent album, Family Affairs, in 1998, and is currently working on a new album, which is scheduled for release in January 2002.
