Brian Setzer Readies Comeback Special; Sets Tour Dates
04/12/2001 7:00 AM, Yahoo! Music Darren Davis
(4/12/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- Brian Setzer will take a break from the Brian Setzer Orchestra for an album and summer tour with a new combo billed as the Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special, a three-person outfit not unlike his former chart-topping group, the Stray Cats. The group will release its debut album, Ignition, June 12 on Surfdog Records, and launch a national tour three days later at a winery in Saratoga, California.
Fellow Orchestra members, slap-bassist Mark W. Winchester and drummer Bernie Dresel, join the guitar master for the tour and the album, which features the new Setzer composition "Hot Rod Songs And Make-Out Tunes." As to whether the project--named after Elvis Presley's famed return to form in 1968--is in fact a tribute to the King, Setzer quips, "Isn't all music an Elvis Presley tribute?"
As for the pressure trying to follow up the success that the Brian Setzer Orchestra had, the bandleader told LAUNCH: "You can't think that way. You can only do the best you can, write the best songs you can, do what I like, and keep nudging forward. If you start to tread water, I think that's when you start to kind of slip a little. You have to kind of keep forging ahead, in little ways."
The two-month tour, meanwhile, will hit the western, northeastern, and midwestern parts of the country. "Audiences can expect a lot of great new songs, some revved-up Stray Cats classics, and stripped-down versions of their favorite BSO tunes," says a spokesperson for the group. For it, Setzer will also play a banjo and a pedal steel guitar, along with the six-string for which he is known.
Look for the trio to appear on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on June 14 and Late Night With Conan O'Brien on July 12.
