311, Rancid, Pennywise, Rollins, New Found Glory To Get Warped

(3/13/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- 311, Rancid, Pennywise, the Rollins Band, and New Found Glory top the list of acts set for the Vans Warped Tour 2001, which kicks off in Phoenix on June 22. Others featured on this year's model of the venerable punk tour, as announced at a party in Los Angeles yesterday (March 12), include Fenix TX, Alien Ant Farm, Good Charlotte, Less Than Jake, and Me First & the Gimme Gimmes, the all-covers side project of NOFX's Fat Mike and the Foo Fighters' Chris Shiflett.

The Vans Warped Tour 2001 will hit more than 40 cities during a summer stretch that extends until its final gig in Detroit on August 12. The roadshow will also feature the Misfits, Fear, H2O, rapper Kool Keith, the Vandals, AFI, the Ataris, Big Wig, Distillers, Grand Theft Audio, Dub Pistols, Guttermouth, the Julianna Theory, Kill Your Idols, Madcap, Jepetto, Midtown, reggae outfit Morgan Heritage, River City Rebels, No Motiv, Saves The Day, Sugarcult, Esham, and Userfriendly.

More acts are expected to be announced shortly.

New Found Glory vocalist Jordan Pundik and guitarist Steve Klein told LAUNCH they're no strangers to the Warped Tour. "We're doing, I think, three or four weeks," Pundik said.

Added Klein, "We did a couple of shows last year. When we first started out we did a local stage on one of the shows, and that was pretty exciting for us."

Pundik continued, "We outdrew the headliner I heard. That's what I heard. I don't know."

Klein said, "We played while Black Eyed Peas were playing, and Dropkick Murphys, and, no, it said it on a local newspaper actually. 'Local band...,' you know, more people watching us than the headlining acts. So it was pretty cool."

Pundik added, "Warped Tour is like summer camp--punk rock summer camp. You like, you wake up, we eat breakfast with all the bands and stuff."

As is always this case with the tour, this year's events will also include extreme athletes--among them, skater Steve Caballero, BMX rider Rick Thorne, and Moto X madman Jeremy "Twitch" Steinberg.

New to the festivities is Incredibly Strange Wrestling, a marriage of rock music and wrestling born in the clubs of San Francisco. "It pits Christian against lion, homosexual against furry beast, and Scientologist boy band against Mexican Viking Horde!" said a spokesperson for the sport.

The Vans Warped Tour 2001 is owned by LAUNCH Media.
