(3/23/00, 3 p.m. ET) - Charlatans U.K. begins an American tour next week in Southern California in support of the band's sixth album, Us And Us Only. The band's presence stateside comes at a time when several noteworthy British rock bands are either gigging here or preparing to, including Oasis, Travis, Stereophonics, and Gomez.

Charlatans lead singer Tim Burgess told LAUNCH that Oasis, for one, no longer matters to him. "I lost interest in, right about [What's The Story] Morning Glory. I have no interest at all. I did hear the single, while I was in America and it's... I thought it was terrible."

Burgess offered more opinion on some of his other contemporaries during a LAUNCH-sponsored chat. He gave a thumbs-up to Gomez and said that Primal Scream mattered even though he didn't "understand[ing] some of the stuff they do." But newcomers Travis, who are reportedly the darlings of the British press, did not receive such an endorsement from Burgess. "I don't really like Travis. They remind me of Simple Minds. I just think that they're irrelevant. I like history, and in the history of rock 'n' roll I just don't believe they're important."

As for who is important, Burgess suggested this list. "I believe that in the history of the '80s and '90s British rock 'n' roll includes Stone Roses, Verve, Charlatans, Oasis, and no one else." Curious concertgoers can decide for themselves over the next two weeks, when the Charlatans visit the U.S. -- dates are listed below.
