(1/5/00, 1 p.m. ET) - Saxophonist David Sanborn received a Grammy nomination yesterday (Jan. 4) in the category of Best Contemporary Jazz Performance for his album Inside. Sanborn is no stranger to Grammy accolades, having won five trophies previously.

Inside marked a bit of a stylistic departure for Sanborn. It is a collection of very personal tunes. Sanborn says its intimate feel is due to the fact that for the first time he recorded in his home studio in New York, away from the pressures of a recording studio.

"I knew I wanted to make an album that was more inside, personal--intimate I think is the word," Sanborn tells LAUNCH. "And so, as I started to gather material--talked to Marcus Miller, the producer, about how we were going to do this album. I kind of told him my ideas about the vibe of the record and we came up with material. He, as he always does, comes up with the majority of the material and he's just really great at capturing the sense of what it is I'm after, but at the same time giving the album a nice balance."

The Grammys will be held Feb. 23 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
