Brian Setzer Loved Doing Steely Dan For 'Irene' Soundtrack

(6/19/00, 6 p.m. ET) - Stray Cats frontman turned swing bandleader Brian Setzer has just finished his new album, Vavoom!, which is set for an August 1 release, but fans can hear his latest music on the soundtrack to the new Jim Carrey film, Me, Myself & Irene. Setzer is one of several artists who covered Steely Dan songs for the film -- in his case, "Bodhisattva," the guitar opus from Steely Dan's second album, Countdown To Ecstasy.

Setzer tells LAUNCH that the film's producers couldn't have picked a better song for him to record. "Surprisingly, they asked me if I'd do it. That was a perfect choice, 'cause I mean, growing up as a kid trying to get that guitar solo off the record, it was perfect, so I basically wrote a big-band chart for that song," he says. "I did all the guitar parts. Some of them are so good, like the Skunk Baxter stuff, I just had to steal. There was no way I could improve those, you know, or do anything different."

In addition to the Brian Setzer Orchestra, the Me, Myself & Irene contingent of Steely Dan covers also features "Do It Again" by Smash Mouth, "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" by Wilco, "Only A Fool Would Say That" by Ivy, "Bad Sneakers" by the Push Stars, "Reelin' In The Years" by Marvelous 3, "Barrytown" by Ben Folds Five, and "Razor Boy" by Billy Goodrum.

The soundtrack was released last week, and the film, which co-stars Renee Zellweger and Robert Forster, opens Friday (June 23).
