Kid Rock's 'American Band' OK By Grand Funk Drummer

(2/24/00, 6 p.m. ET) - One of the highlights of Wednesday (Feb. 23) night's Grammy Awards telecast was young rap/metal artist
Kid Rock working the
Grand Funk Railroad classic "We're An American Band" into his performance. LAUNCH spoke to Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer about the routine. "You know, I sat down to watch the Grammys and I saw Kid Rock and I said, 'You know, I ought to stick around,' 'cause I've heard that he's doing 'We're An American Band.' But I said, 'You know, he probably won't do it. I mean, he won't do this on the Grammys, you know.' So I changed the channel later on - and then everybody's calling, going 'Did you hear Kid Rock doing "We're An American Band"?' I missed it!" A lot of classic rockers might have a problem with one of their songs being given Kid Rock's rap/metal hybrid treatment, but Brewer says it's cool. "You know, I am so honored that he's doing this song, and he's doing it with pride. I think it's terrific, I really do. He can relate to the Detroit, the Michigan, the American kind of thing." -- Bruce Simon, New York
