Everlast On Winning A Grammy With Carlos Santana
02/23/2000 10:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Craig Rosen
(2/23/00, 10 p.m. ET) - Santana's Grammy glory was shared with the many artists who helped him make the smash album, Supernatural, including Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, Everlast, Eric Clapton, and many others. Backstage, Everlast reflected on sharing the best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal award for "Put Your Lights On" with Carlos Santana. "Winning a Grammy with him…you're a part of history now. This guy's on the level of, like, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page…It's like there's not many of these guitar guys that are still up and doing what he's doing. I knew who he was when I was this high, so to be nominated was bugged out enough. To actually, like, win…I'm blown away right now." Everlast even joked that he may have won another Grammy if Santana had been a part of his own hit single, "What It's Like," from his album Whitey Ford Sings The Blues. That song was nominated in the best male rock vocal performance category, but lost to Lenny Kravitz's cover of The Guess Who
's "American Woman" from the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack. "I wanted to put his name on my other nomination, then I would have won it. I was nominated for my record, but it didn't have Santana slashed on it, so my odds were diminished greatly," he quipped. "But I mean, that's 90% of the reason I came here. If I had just been nominated just for my own, I probably wouldn't have shown up. I would of just phoned it in or something." -- Barry Jeckell
