(9/7/99, 1 a.m. PDT) - Move over Spice Girls, Vitamin C is good for you and she's getting plenty of exposure on TV. Tonight the artist will appear on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. The late-night appearance comes after the poppy dance artist received exposure a trio of TV shows this summer. Vitamin C's hit single "Smile," currently No. 25 on Billboard's Hot 100, was first used by Beverly Hills 90210 during an opening sequence of a May sweeps episode. On July 11, the reggae-sounding track made its first appearance as the theme song to a new WB series starring Harry Hamlin called Movie Stars. And as if it wasn't getting enough screen time, "Smile" was used in the summer commercials promoting a new Friday night NBC show about the lives of three couples, called Cold Feet. All of the TV exposure has Vitamin C, born Colleen Fitzpatrick, smiling. "Today's kids watch a lot of TV and as they proved with Dawson's Creek, TV music will sell if it's good," says the New Yorker. "It was pretty exciting to see so many people jump on a new single from a new artist. I think it is a good introduction to what you will find on the album as well. I sat down with the 'Smile' track and was trying to come up with lyrics. I think it turned out really fun and a great pick-me-up." Although it seems as if Vitamin C came out of nowhere, this orange-haired cutie has history. She starred in John Waters's Hairspray and was also the lead singer of Eve's Plum, who put out an album and had minimal radio success with "I Want It All," which stalled at No. 30 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks. Vitamin C warns everyone not to expect the same old thing from her new musical endeavor. Aside from a cover of the Split Enz hit "I Got You," songs on the self-titled effort sample classics by Santana and the Clash. "I wanted this project to be totally separate from that, so I experimented in a lot of areas. Eve's Plum was way more rock-oriented. This is good pop music with intelligent lyrics and a feel-good attitude. And I wanted to use my dancing shoes."
