Kurupt Says Hollister Inspired Him To Record With Girlfriend

(6/19/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- Kurupt's first single from Space Boogey: Smoke Oddessey is a bit more light-hearted than his trademark gangsta rap fare. But the founding member of Tha Dogg Pound (now called D.P.G.) with Daz Dillinger tells LAUNCH that he was willing to take a chance at trying something different.
The song, "It's Over," is a duet with his girlfriend Natina Reed, one-third of TLC rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes's protege group Blaque. Kurupt says R&B singer Dave Hollister inspired him to record a song with his woman.
"Me and my woman was just clowning in the studio," Kurupt recalled. "She wrote my first verse. I wrote her second verse, and she wrote third verse for me, and I wrote a third verse for her. She was just like, 'You go ahead and do it, man, I'm tired.' I like Dave Hollister. You know, he had his wife in his video. Instead of getting a model or paying somebody to do whatever, he made it a family event. And that's where I really want to take it in my life with hip-hop because ain't too many more MCs whose heads I can sever and cut off. So it's time for me to start having real fun with this and stop worrying about what people think about the songs I'm going to do and all that. And that's what I did with 'It's Over' with me and my woman."
Space Boogey: Smoke Oddessey, scheduled to be released in late July, includes collaborations with Nate Dogg, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst and DJ Lethal, Everlast, Soopafly, and DJ Quik.
