(9/23/02, 1 p.m. ET) -- Los Angeles pop-rockers Phantom Planet kick off a stint Monday (September 23) as the opening act for one of the group's biggest heroes, Elvis Costello. The band joins Costello at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle and will log 12 dates with the storied singer-songwriter through the first week of October.
Two Phantom members--frontman Alex Greenwald and drummer Jason Schwartzman--have already met Costello at one of his concerts in Philadelphia. But Greenwald tells LAUNCH that it wasn't the most eloquent of conversations.
"They gave us backstage passes and we were so nervous. I clammed up. We started talking, he and I, just the smallest talk of guitars and how his guitars were gonna go out of tune because they were soaked, flooded in a locker that he kept them in," he says. "And the only thing I could say was, 'Yeah, I'm sure the tremolo doesn't work as well or something.'"
Phantom Planet is touring in support of its latest album, The Guest, featuring the singles, "California" and "Lonely Day." Costello, meanwhile, issues his most rock-minded album in recent memory, When I Was Cruel, in April.
Bassist Sam Farrar tells LAUNCH that when Costello's performing, "We're gonna be glued to the side of the stage, that's for sure."
