Five For Fighting Aims For Spring Release

Matt Ashare

(9/20/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- After two years of touring in support of his group's second album, America Town, and its single, "Superman (It's Not Easy)," Five For Fighting main man John Ondrasik is now back home in Los Angeles focusing on writing songs for a follow-up effort.

"It's back to the drawing board," writes Ondrasik on the group's official website (fiveforfighting.com). "I hope to have something new for you all by spring. I'll make sure I give you an honest record built on the inspiration you have all given me and my band these last 24 months. See you in the penalty box."

After being released to relatively little fanfare in September of 2000, America Town slowly gained popularity. A year later it was on its way to gold status for sales of 500,000 due in great part to the single, "Superman (It's Not Easy)," which emerged as a song of healing after 9/11.

Ondrasik writes: "I can't thank you all enough for making the dream a reality. From the smallest of side stages to Madison Square Garden; from the van to the (Almost Famous) tour bus, from my local coffee shop to Rome and the world, I have been humbled and frankly a bit vindicated by the reaction to these tiny songs that were never supposed to be."

Five For Fighting will issue one new song before the end of the year, "The Hoppity Song," to be featured on the children's music collection, For The Kids. The release is due October 22 for Nettwerk Records. Sarah McLachlan, Cake, and the Barenaked Ladies also appear.
