(3/6/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- Rapper Keith Murray, who spent 33 months in prison from 1998 to 2001 for a second-degree assault conviction, recently shared that he turned the negative experience into positive energy.
"See, I'm no stranger to hard times--changes, in and out of jail, people dying, people in and out of jail--so I take that all as a plus, man," Murray said. "When I sat down and really figured out, 'Yo, why am I in here, man?' I can do nothing but take that negative energy and turn it into positive energy for myself."
The rapper shared that the loss of his mother was the hardest obstacle he's had to overcome. "You know, I don't got no parents," Murray said. "My parents died when I was younger. They never was here to see me have fame or be a rapper. My moms was my best friend. That's all the pain in the world--nothing can happen to me in this world that hurt more than that, so I take the good with the bad and just focus on the positive seed in that negativity."
Murray's next album, He's Keith Murray, is due out April 22. The first single from the set is "Yeah Yeah You Know It!" featuring Redman and Erick Sermon.
