Sevendust's Lajon Witherspoon On Lenny Kravitz Incident
12/08/2000 10:00 AM, Yahoo! Music Craig Rosen
(12/8/00, 10 a.m. ET) - That Lenny Kravitz was mistakenly identified as a bank robbery suspect late last month in Miami prompted a reaction of little surprise from fellow African-American rocker Lajon Witherspoon, vocalist with Sevendust. Witherspoon says his race has also put him in uncomfortable situations, especially when it comes to being the frontman of a rock band.
"You think about me being a black man in a genre of music that I'm in, and going to a different town every day, you're definitely gonna probably deal with different people that you run along," he told LAUNCH. "So I expect to see different sides of people. But I always say, things will never be the way they used to be. They can't stop it. I have no room for ignorance."
In the aftermath of the incident, Kravitz told the New York Daily News, "Being black, I have dealt with all kinds of things because of my color, but nothing like this."
