Joe Strummer Memorial Forest To Be Planted In England

(1/21/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Clash and Joe Strummer fans are being asked to plant trees for the late frontman, who died December 22 after suffering a heart attack at home in London. Future Forests, an environmental charity that Strummer supported, has announced plans to plant a Joe Strummer Memorial Forest on Britain's Isle Of Skye.
In recent years, Strummer had become interested in gardening at home and was an environmental activist--in fact, a Future Forests spokesperson told Britain's New Musical Express that Strummer helped to inspire the organization with his backstage comments at the 1997 Glastonbury Festival. "Joe absolutely loved forests and trees," the spokesperson said. "Joe...decided that he would have his own forest planted to offset the emissions from [the manufacture of] his CDs, and become the world's first Carbon Neutral artist."
Trees for the Strummer forest can be purchased at Future Forests' website (futureforests.com). Those buying trees will receive a certificate and a map of the forest.
